The MySWANS™ Framework:
Orchid Wellness' Holistic Approach to Total Wellness
Wellness is not a checklist. It is a rhythm, a relationship with your own body, and a return to the basics that hold everything else together. The MySWANS™ framework is the whole-person model at the heart of how Chelsea cares for every patient at Orchid Wellness.
When people think of wellness, they often picture isolated habits: drink more water, get better sleep, eat something green, maybe squeeze in a workout. Each one treated as a separate project to manage, optimize, or feel guilty about skipping. But real wellness is not about individual tasks performed in isolation. It is about a rhythm. A way of paying attention to your body and responding with care, consistently, across the areas that quietly hold everything else together.
That is where MySWANS™ comes in.
MySWANS™ is the whole-person wellness framework I developed from my own healing journey and refined through years of clinical practice at Orchid Wellness. It is the lens through which I see every patient who walks through my door, and it is the standard of care I return to again and again because it works. Not just in theory but in the actual clinical outcomes I see when patients begin to restore these five foundational areas of their health.
Where MySWANS™ Came From
I did not write MySWANS™: A Graceful Return to You because I had wellness figured out. I wrote it because I had stood at the edge of my own survival and needed a framework to find my way back. I was a healthcare provider building a practice, raising two young children through a divorce, and pouring everything I had into everyone except myself. The very things I was trained to prescribe to my patients, rest, hydration, movement, nourishment, and stress management, I had stopped applying to my own life.
In December of 2023, sitting alone in my car, bone tired, I asked myself what I was actually doing. Not just professionally but with my own health, my own habits, my own body. That moment was the beginning of a shift. I had to reimagine what thriving looked like, not just for my patients but for myself. And I started with the basics. The same ones this framework is built on.
In MySWANS™: A Graceful Return to You, I write about the swan metaphor that anchors the entire framework. A swan gliding across a lake appears graceful and still. But underneath the surface, its legs are paddling hard to stay afloat. That is many of us: appearing calm and capable on the outside while quietly fighting to hold everything together underneath. MySWANS helps bring alignment to both layers so you are not just performing peace — you are actually living it.
What MySWANS™ Actually Is
MySWANS™ is an acronym for the five core areas that quietly hold everything else together: Sleep, Water, Activity, Nutrition, and Stress Management. The "My" at the beginning is not decorative. It is the most important part of the framework.
At first glance, these five areas might seem obvious. And that is the point. These are the areas we neglect first when we are overwhelmed. They are also the first areas we must restore if we want to feel whole again. The framework is not about creating a rigid routine or checking off boxes. It is about noticing what your body and mind are asking for and responding with care.
Because these five pillars hold each other up. If you are not sleeping, your nervous system cannot reset. If you are not drinking water, your brain fog deepens. If you are not moving, your mood dips. If your nutrition is poor, your hormones and energy crash. If your stress is unaddressed, your whole system braces for survival even when life is stable.
Most of us try to fix the symptom: we reach for coffee when we are tired or scroll when we are anxious. Real change happens when we realign the whole.
The Research Behind the Framework
MySWANS™ was not built from theory alone. The clinical evidence for whole-person, lifestyle-based approaches to health is substantial and growing. Research consistently confirms what the framework reflects in practice.
A 2024 study published in PLOS ONE examined more than 2,000 young adults across three countries and found that sleep quality, physical activity, and dietary choices were all independently associated with psychological wellbeing. Importantly, the researchers found that these behaviors worked additively, meaning each pillar contributed its own unique benefit to a person's overall sense of thriving.1 The study's title captures the essence of MySWANS™ exactly: "From Surviving to Thriving."
A systematic review examining the relationship between physical activity and sleep found that adults who exercised at least 30 minutes daily slept an average of 15 minutes longer than those who did not, and that moderate-intensity aerobic exercise consistently improved sleep quality in patients with insomnia.2 This is the interconnection at the heart of MySWANS™: when you restore one pillar, the others respond.
Wellness researchers and clinicians have increasingly moved toward multi-domain frameworks that treat health as a whole-person equation rather than isolated symptoms. A 2024 review published in PMC defining wellness as "a holistic and multidimensional concept represented on a continuum of being well that goes beyond health" reflects exactly the philosophy that MySWANS™ is built on.3 And a review of lifestyle medicine practices from the same period confirmed that integrating physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and stress management simultaneously produces superior health outcomes compared to addressing any single factor in isolation.4
The Five Pillars, One at a Time
Each pillar of MySWANS™ is explored in depth in its own chapter in the book, and each will have its own dedicated post here on The Wellness Bloom. Here is the clinical and personal foundation of each one:
Sleep is where healing happens. Tissues rebuild, hormones reset, emotions process, and the brain consolidates what it learned during the day. Sleep deprivation disrupts nearly every other pillar: it raises cortisol, increases hunger hormones, suppresses immune function, and impairs the decision-making that drives every other wellness choice you make. I put sleep first in MySWANS™ because without it, everything else is harder. Not just marginally harder. Meaningfully harder. Restoring sleep is often the intervention that unlocks all the others.
Our bodies are composed of around 60 percent water. Every cell, tissue, and organ depends on hydration to function. And yet, hydration is the first thing most people sacrifice when life gets full. Mild dehydration, which many people live with as a daily baseline, affects focus, mood, skin health, digestion, and the ability to cope with stress. Hydration is not just a physical act. In MySWANS™, water is treated as a ritual of self-respect, a daily signal to your body that you are worth tending to.
Activity is not about weight loss or fitness performance. It is about energy, circulation, emotional release, and the signal it sends to your nervous system that you are safe. When we move, particularly with gentle, rhythmic movement like walking, stretching, or dancing, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system and begin to downregulate the stress response. Activity does not have to be a gym session. It can be squats while brushing your teeth, a walk between appointments, or dancing in your kitchen. The consistency matters far more than the intensity.
Nutrition is often the most emotionally complicated pillar. For many people, food has been tied to guilt, shame, control, or chaos for so long that the clinical conversation about eating feels charged before it even begins. MySWANS™ reframes the conversation: nutrition is not about control. It is about connection. It is about asking, what do I need to feel whole, energized, and cared for today? Food is fuel, but it is also comfort, tradition, and culture. The goal is not perfection. It is nourishment without shame and eating with more presence and intention.
Stress is part of life. Unmanaged, chronic stress is a clinical risk factor. It rewires the nervous system, keeps the body locked in a fight-or-flight response, disrupts sleep, clouds thinking, and wreaks havoc on hormones, digestion, and immune function. Over time, the tension becomes background noise. You stop noticing the shallow breathing, the short fuse, the jaw clenched at traffic. MySWANS™ treats stress management not as a luxury but as a survival skill, because your body deserves to know it is safe now.
The "My" That Makes It Personal
The most important part of MySWANS™ is the word that comes before the acronym. "My" reflects the deeply personal nature of this journey. This framework is not a competition. It is not about performing wellness better than someone else. It is about owning your rhythm, your capacity, and your return.
In practice, this means the framework meets you where you are. Some days, it will be a full engagement with all five pillars. Other days, it will be one glass of water and one intentional breath. Both count. You still count. You are worthy of wellness even in process.
MySWANS was never about becoming someone new. It was always about returning to who you already are. Beneath the exhaustion, the over-functioning, and the survival mode, there is a version of you that is whole.
Chelsea Asante · MySWANS™: A Graceful Return to YouThe framework also incorporates the Akan concept of Sankofa, from my native Ghana: "there is nothing wrong with going back." Sankofa in the context of MySWANS™ means returning to the basics, to your own body, your own breath, your own peace. Not as regression. As reclamation.
MySWANS™ as a Clinical Standard of Care
At Orchid Wellness, MySWANS™ is not an add-on or a wellness bonus at the end of a visit. It is the framework through which I provide holistic care. It is how I see patients fully, and it is how I help them see themselves more clearly.
When a patient's numbers are not where I would like them to be, whether that is labs, blood pressure, blood sugar, mood, or energy levels, the root cause is often a deficiency in one or more of these five areas. We identify which pillar has been most neglected. We focus on restoring what has been depleted. And what happens? The numbers begin to shift. Not always dramatically, not always immediately, but consistently and meaningfully.
I have watched patients who have been told by previous providers that everything looked "fine" on paper, who still felt terrible every day, make profound shifts by simply restoring sleep, rebuilding hydration habits, and addressing the chronic stress that had been running in the background for years. No new prescription. No dramatic intervention. Just a return to the basics that their bodies had been asking for.
MySWANS™ in your next visit: At every Orchid Wellness appointment, Chelsea reviews all five pillars as part of your comprehensive care plan. If you have not been asked about your sleep, hydration, activity, nutrition, and stress levels, bring them up. These are not peripheral to your health. They are central to it. A Graceful Return to You
Why This Matters Beyond the Clinic
The framing that wellness is a luxury for people who have the time and money to pursue it is one of the most harmful misconceptions in modern health culture. Sleep, water, movement, food, and peace are not luxuries. They are biological requirements. They are the baseline from which every other health improvement becomes possible.
MySWANS™ is built specifically for people who do not have unlimited time and resources. For mothers who forget to eat because they are feeding everyone else first. For providers who know exactly what their patients need but are not applying it to themselves. For people in transition, in recovery, in the middle of building something hard. The framework does not require a gym membership, an expensive supplement stack, or a perfect morning routine. It requires awareness, intention, and a willingness to return, again and again, to what your body is asking for.
If you recognize yourself in any of this, this framework is for you. Start wherever you can. One pillar at a time. One day at a time. One glass of water at a time, if that is where you are. The return has already begun.
