# A Graceful Return:⏎ _Reflecting on Your Wellness Year_

Before the resolutions begin, take a moment to see what you have actually built.
A simple MySWANS™ year-end reflection you can do in one quiet hour.

As the year winds down, the noise starts: new year, new you, start over, do more.
I want to offer you something different. MySWANS™ was never about becoming someone
new. It is about returning to who you already are.

I wrote [MySWANS™: A Graceful Return to You](https://myorchidwellness.com/myswans-a-graceful-return-to-you/)
from the edge of my own exhaustion, because I needed a way back to myself before
I could help anyone else find theirs. One of the practices that helped most was
simple: before setting new goals, look honestly and kindly at the year behind you.

## Why reflection works _better than resolutions_

Resolutions often fail because they ask for a big change all at once. Research on
how habits actually form tells a gentler story. In one well-known study, it took
participants a median of **66 days** for a new daily habit to feel automatic, with
a wide range from 18 to 254 days. Missing a single day did not undo their progress.
^(1)

Planning helps too. An analysis of 94 studies found that specific “if-then” plans,
such as “If it is 7 a.m., then I drink a glass of water,” made people meaningfully
more likely to reach their goals.^(2) And self-compassion is not a soft extra: people
with higher self-compassion tend to report better physical health and healthier
habits.^(3) Being kind to yourself is part of what makes change last.

## The MySWANS™ reflection: _one prompt per pillar_

Set aside an hour, a warm drink, and a notebook or the [MySWANS™ Companion Journal](https://myorchidwellness.com/myswans-a-graceful-return-to-you/).
Answer each prompt honestly. There are no wrong answers.

My: Your Journey

What did this year ask of you? What are you proud of that nobody else saw?

Sleep

When did you feel most rested this year? What protected that rest, and what got
in its way?

Water

What helped you remember to drink water? Where did it fall off?

Activity

What kind of movement did you actually enjoy, not just tolerate?

Nutrition

Which meals left you feeling nourished, not just full? Who were you with?

Stress Management

What drained you most this year? What, or who, restored you?

## Choose one pillar, _not five_

After you reflect, resist the urge to fix everything at once. Choose the one pillar
that would make the biggest difference in how you feel, then write one small if-
then plan for it. A few examples:

 * **Sleep:** If it is 9:30 p.m., then I put my phone on the charger outside my
   bedroom.
 * **Water:** If I pour my morning coffee, then I drink a glass of water first.
 * **Activity:** If I finish lunch, then I walk for 10 minutes.
 * **Nutrition:** If I am packing lunch, then I add one vegetable or fruit.
 * **Stress Management:** If I sit in the car after work, then I take five slow
   breaths before I go inside.

Keep your plan where you will see it. The **MySWANS™ Lite** tracker in our [web app](https://myorchidwellness.com/appsupport/)
lets you check in daily so you can watch your progress build over the 66 days, or
however long your pace takes.

## A note _on grace_

Some years are growth years. Some years are survival years. If this was a year of
grief, illness, caregiving, job changes, or just getting through, your reflection
might mostly be about what you endured. That counts. Rest and recovery are not detours
from wellness. They are part of it.

If you missed goals you set last January, you are in good company. Instead of asking“
Why didn’t I do it?” try asking “What was in the way, and what support would help?”
That question leads somewhere useful.

> Progress is not always visible from the inside. Sometimes the bravest thing you
> did this year was keep going.

## Your year-end _health check-in_

Reflection is also a good moment to take care of the practical side of your health:

 * **Schedule your annual wellness visit** if you have not had one this year.
 * **Review your labs and screenings**, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood
   sugar, and age-appropriate cancer screenings.
 * **Refill and review medications** so you start the new year without gaps.
 * **Check your benefits.** Many insurance plans and HSA or FSA accounts reset on
January 1, so December can be a good time to use what you have.

If one pillar stood out in your reflection, the Wellness Bloom has a deeper post
on each: [Sleep](https://myorchidwellness.com/why-sleep-comes-first-in-the-myswans-framework/),
[Water](https://myorchidwellness.com/dehydration-signs-you-might-be-missing/), [Activity](https://myorchidwellness.com/movement-as-medicine/),
[Nutrition](https://myorchidwellness.com/fuel-over-fixation/), and [Stress Management](https://myorchidwellness.com/what-chronic-stress-does-to-your-body/).

## A sample _reflection hour_

 * **First 10 minutes:** settle in. Put your phone away, make tea, and take a few
   slow breaths.
 * **Next 30 minutes:** move through the six prompts above. Write freely, without
   editing.
 * **Next 10 minutes:** read back what you wrote and circle the pillar that stands
   out most.
 * **Last 10 minutes:** write one if-then plan for that pillar and put it somewhere
   you will see every day.

## Celebrate _what worked_

Reflection is not only about finding what to fix. Make a list of everything that
went right this year, no matter how small: the walks you took, the appointments
you kept, the boundaries you set, the nights you chose rest. Research on habits
shows that consistency, not perfection, is what builds lasting change, so every
one of those moments mattered.

If you live with family or a partner, consider doing a short version of this reflection
together. Ask each other: What was your favorite moment this year? What do you want
more of next year? Shared goals, like family walks after dinner or a regular bedtime,
are often easier to keep.

## Questions to carry _into the new year_

 * What do I want to feel more of next year?
 * What do I need to stop carrying alone?
 * Who supports my wellness, and how can I spend more time with them?
 * What is one thing I can do for my health in the first week of January?

Whatever you discover in your reflection, remember that you do not have to do this
alone. Bring what you learned to your next visit. Telling your provider “sleep was
my hardest pillar this year” or “I want to feel stronger” gives us a real starting
point for a plan that fits your life. A graceful return is not a single moment.
It is a practice, and every small step back toward yourself counts.
